The Ways of White Folks

1. I sneaked out early from work on Friday. Many police cars and helicopters in downtown made me scared, but it turned out to be nothing.
2. I went to Brooklyn and hung out with Chloe, Fatty, and Matthew. I couldn’t keep my hands off the new kitty in Fatty's apartment.
3. On Saturday, we brunched at Tom’s, encountered a weird public art thing in front of the Brooklyn Library, and shopped at the farmer’s market.
4. Later, Poppa and I ate dinner at California Pizza Kitchen, which now lists calories. I picked up some sunglasses at Nordstrom’s Rack and saw Bruno.
5. On Sunday, I got a mani/pedi and hung out at Poppa’s parent’s house in Yonkers. Then, I visited poor Holly, who is recovering from being hit by a car. I cried. She has chunks of fur missing, her bandage is pee-soaked, and she’s too skinny. Poor doo!
6. Oona switched from hunting snakes to birds. She brought one inside, and Pugs put it outside and other birds helped it fly again.
7. I read Langston Hughes' The Ways of White Folks: Stories.
8. My Hibachi Magic Wand exploded with sparks and blew a fuse.
9. I saw Curtis Sliwa from the Guardian Angels on Madison today.

Authoress?

1. Last Thursday, Poppa and I met Laura and her friend Jill, walked through the pouring rain, and had dinner at our favorite Vietnamese place in Chinatown, located in an alley, in a basement.
2. Then we went to the Double Down for drinks, and I grilled Laura on proper dental care. (She's training to be a dentist in Portland and has seen her fair share of meth mouth). She wanted to be the dentist that says flossing is bogus, but it's the most important thing you should do. Also, after you eat or drink something sugary or throw up, you should rinse your mouth out with water and wait 20 minutes to brush your teeth. If you brush your teeth immediately afterward, your teeth haven't remineralized and you can damage your teeth.
3. Then we went to Katz's Deli for knishes. I had never been there before, and their ticketing system intimidated me.
4. Over the weekend, we watched Jackass: The Movie 1 and 2 because Laura hadn't seen them before. (And my room is full of Jackass posters).
5. On Friday, we saw a bad skinhead band at the Charleston and walked around Williamsburg.
6. On the Fourth of July, Poppa and I watched Food, Inc. Poppa was feeling pretty lousy, so we went home and watched Get Trashed, a documentary about thrash metal.
7. The rest of the weekend was extremely low key.
8. Holly got hit by a car, and her leg is bandaged! Poor elderly doo!
9. I visited the High Line yesterday and had champagne at the Standard Hotel (la de da).
10. I finished reading Summer Crossing (a book that was saved from the garbage by Capote's apartment sitter). I'm now reading The Fine Art of Small Talk and The Plague.
11. In my neighborhood tonight, I heard a little kid call his mother a "fucking asshole," and Nuyorican teenager was singing Death Metal style into a wireless mic as he walked. (I was inside and started laughing, and Poppa was outside and laughed too).
12. I had a sexy shower dream featuring an unnamed acquaintance.
13. My book proposal was accepted! I called Poppa hysterically when I got the news. I'm having a high-end publishing lawyer take a look at the contract. I'm hoping my sexy phone voice can provide some free legal advice!

Sulphuric acid

1. I had a dream that Glenn Danzing squeezed my butt, and I liked it.
2. I read Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and the edition included “A Christmas Memory,” and I almost started crying on the train. “Keep it together, Girl,” I told myself.
3. Later, I read Chekhov’s “The Lady with the Pet Dog” and “Vanka,” and I got upset again, so I took a break from reading for the weekend.
4. I was a band widow because Poppa was playing some shows in Baltimore. I laid low, cleaned the apartment, got a mani/pedi, and bought my weight in beauty supplies (lots of Soap and Glory from Target).
5. I saw Z at Jacob Burns and loved it.

pilates

1. The fruit flies have gotten so bad that we had to super clean the apartment yesterday, and we can't eat at home until they die off in a day or so.
2. I bought a new comfy bed cover and a pillow, and this makes me very happy.
3. On Sunday, Poppa and I went to his parent's house for pasta.
4. On Saturday, I went to Poppa's sister's bridal shower, which was as expected. I took care of all the old ladies, and they loved me for it.
5. Later on, Poppa and I went to The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. I liked it, even though it was so different than the original. They had wireless on the subway, which was weird.
6. We had time to kill before the show so I went to Nordstrom Rack and went crazy. I bought heels, a dress, a Ben Sherman shirt and tie for Poppa, and Smashbox cosmetics.
7. I had a dream last week in which I spoke French.
8. On Friday, I saw Starnes and Shah then walked around St. Marks happily.

I'm better

1. After being dramatic for 48 hours, I'm feeling much better. My left leg and knee are sore from walking funny, but I can stand up straight, walk distances, and carry relatively heavy things (my purse and groceries from the Peach Pit).
2. One of my goals of the summer is to carry less things around everyday. Since I won't be in school much longer, I won't be carrying 2 inches worth of readings around all the time. I don't want to look like a slob with stuff coming out of my bag all the time.
3. Another goal for summer is to talk more. I don't talk to enough people in my daily life. I have to get out of my head like an autistic person.
4. Also more crafts this summer, because I won't be in school.
5. I bought Poppa and myself pedometers, which are awesome! I like measuring how much I walk. I'm trying to walk a lot more to get in better shape. From 42nd to work and back; to Whole Foods at Union Square and back to pick up lunch; and from the last stop on the 6 to home. Those are my daily goals in good weather when I'm feeling good.
6. I didn't want to go to work today, but Poppa said I should, and he drove me in because he needed to use my car after work. He was being very silly by making fun of things on the radio, and I rediscovered for the millionth time why I love him so much.
7. He had flowers delivered to my office! Pink roses, pink carnations, and white poms: I liked explaining to everyone that there was no special occasion. "Just because [I'm awesome]."
8. One of my interns surprised me with "back medicine:" acai/banana/blueberry/raspberry energy smoothie I often get from my favorite tea house!
9. I finished my papers yesterday and felt depressed. I drank some vodka and watched the Golden Girls, then dumped out the rest of the vodka because I don't need alcohol in my house--not even to wash my hair with.
10. One of the papers was not good enough for my standards. (I'll get a good grade, but that's not the point). I don't get to devote enough time to school. I spoiled myself intellectually growing up because I was able to spend so much time with school work. Not that I was a perfect student, but I got to roll ideas around in my head a lot more then than I do now. I think about how much time I spent in the St. Kate's library, in the stacks, and, even though I was depressed and wanted a more exciting college life, I miss that part the most! It makes me sad/happy/wistful to think about it: a refuge. So, while it makes me proud that I've been able to do so much grad work, all while working full-time and for the most part free, and part of me thinks that people that go to grad school full-time are pantywaists that are avoiding working for a living,(I know that this is not true) I also hate having to rush through work, instead of luxuriating in it.

Pray for me

1. Yesterday, I woke up with a sore lower back, which I thought was cramps. Later on, I realized that I had FUCKED UP MY BACK! The only way I could walk around was to hunch and be crooked. It wasn't like I had a big day planned anyway: I was going to work on my paper, then go to the gym and get a manicure in the neighborhood, but I couldn't even do that.
2. I've slathered Tiger Balm all over myself and am wearing one of those heat wraps on my side. I can stand up relatively straight today, but my left hip pooches out so I'm still crooked. It feels like it hurts less, then I do something and want to die from the pain.
3. I'm not sure how I did it anyway. I worked out on Saturday, but not any more rigorously than I usually do. On Saturday night, I was sitting strangely to work with beads so I think that's what did it.
4. I'm staying home from work today, STILL writing my paper due at 6 pm today. (It's about archival description and visual collections.) The only way I can make myself feel better is to act as though I'm having a spa day at home. Lots of sleep, lots of good food to eat, and lots of beauty treatments to keep me from killing myself.
5. I finished Peyton Place last night. That and My Milk Toof made me feel so sad (but no tears) that I could only rest on my side with my hand on the cover of the book and sigh.
6. I want to go to the library today, but I am too scared to walk or drive there in my condition.

Chicken George

1. On Sunday, I went to Michael’s and spent a buttload on beads. I was in heaven, and Poppa was walking around aimlessly, listening to his audio book, waiting for me.
2. We’re in the middle of Roots and I’m loving it. The cavalcade of 70s actors is insane.
3. I found what I thought was a pubic hair near my desk at work recently. The first one was about six months ago, the second one was a month ago, and the third one was earlier this week, and I found a couple more. They are very long and black. After some CSI work with the office manager, we figured out that they were pieces of a very old feather duster our cleaning guy uses.
4. It’s finals week, so I’m working on a paper and an annotated bibliography. I’m in the middle of it and feeling that weird academic high I get from writing papers.
5. Pugs is in Amsterdam, and I keep getting funny emails about his experiences and the kitties he meets.
6. Poppa went to a book signing and met Chuck Barris, his idol.
